Tunnel entrance on east side Beckwith's Gap. Picture on left side is from atop the tunnel's eastern entrance and shows the Chenango Branch leaving the tunnel and heading toward the west shore of Cazenovia Lake. Picture on right side shows tunnel's eastern entrance (obscured behind branches). The tunnel runs 1600 feet in an east-west orientation. Due to the tunnel's relatively low height, only older style steam locomotives could be used for passing through the tunnel necessitating a turntable placed to the south of the Cazenovia station where the "shorter" locomotives would be turned around for the journey back through the tunnel northward.
