Location of ice train wreck on this line. According to historical report the train wreck occurred in 1898 and involved a train laden with cut ice from Cazenovia Lake. The train lost control on the continuous downslope between Cazenovia and Manlius and sped along the tracks until the middle portion of the train derailed into a heap of splintered freight cars. The train's engineer had tried to manually slow the train by climbing atop the freight cars and setting the brakes to no avail. The picture to the upper left shows the placement of a switch gear which was used to divert on-coming trains to a temporary set of rails used to go around the wreck while work crews clean up the mess. The lower picture shows ties for the newer replaced line. The picture at the center of the page is of a box car rail with lanyard tie-down hook still attached. The picture at the right shows the area, now widened for the by-pass where the cars began to derail. |
